Red Cross helped eleven left homeless by December 15th
mobile home fire…
Eleven members of one northeast Georgia family survived a midnight mobile home fire near the Premium Outlets Mall in Dawson County the icy night of December 15th. The twelfth resident, an 84-year old grandmother, died in the intense fire, which completely destroyed the family’s home.
Heavy sleet and freezing rain that night in north Georgia delayed, but did not prevent, three Red Cross Northeast Georgia Chapter disaster volunteers from coming to the fire victims’ rescue, providing food and replacement clothing to help the stricken family start getting their lives back together.
The Red Cross is able to help disaster victims in our communities because of generous financial support from United Ways, businesses, and individuals.

New Introductory Disaster Services Course Announced
The American Red Cross has announced a new course, Disaster Services: An Overview, to replace Introduction to Disaster Services, Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating your Compassion into Community Action and Mass Care Overview. These three courses will be phased out over the next few months. The Chapter can begin to offer the new course as soon as Instructor training can be completed. We hope to be able to offer this new course before the end of this year.
Disaster Services: An Overview is an Instructor led course that takes about 3 1/2 hours to complete. Please watch this page for the announcement of when this course will be scheduled. Please email Larry Tyson at ltyson@negaredcross.org or call 770-532-8453 for additional information..

Disaster Planning & Preparedness Phase
The American Red Cross works year round to assist in the education of the people to prepare for disasters and emergencies before they occur, through public service announcements, community presentations to organizations, schools, day-cares, businesses, local, state and federal agencies, and churches. We also work closely with the local governments and private businesses in planning for emergencies within the community.

DISASTER RESPONSE & RECOVERY PHASE
The American Red Cross has trained disaster volunteers and staff that respond to disasters to provide assistance to those affected by a disaster. Some families may not need any financial assistance, but we provide much more than that to our disaster clients. We also provide a canteen/respite area for those public safety personnel who are responding to protect our communities. Whether responding to a Local disaster, National or International disaster, the American Red Cross working under a Congressional Charter of 1905, provides the following basic needs:
